Elementary school is a vital step that prepares students for later learning and life in general. The Elementary Department at IIS believes that children are curious by nature, they are eager to learn and explore the world around them. Therefore, we foster students’ development in their relationships, identity, emotional skills, character and overall well-being. Furthermore, we help our students learn about their religion, explore different types of texts in Arabic and English, learn the fundamental concepts of Science and Mathematics, and gain a basic understanding of Social Studies.
The elementary department at IIS serves students in first grade through sixth grade and it offers two different programs; National and International.
At IIS, we believe that the quality of education our students receive in elementary school will definitely affect their entire life. Therefore, we put great emphasis on developing the whole child to become an effective leader that can leave an impact on humanity.
We follow the American Program, in other words, we build our curriculum on Common Core Standards for English and Math and on Next Generation Science Standards for Science. Thus preparing our students to succeed in (ACT , SAT ,AP) External Tests.
We support our curriculum with IIS Students’ Learning Expectation that incorporate our school’s vision and mission into the curriculum. We work hard to integrate several activities into our curriculum, guided by the academic standards, to give our students the chance to enjoy learning, see it as meaningful and as a result become lifelong learners that are responsible, talented and problem solvers.
In the Elementary Department, children develop knowledge in the following subjects:
English Language
The English Language Arts programs are designed around the Common Core State Standards to accelerate students from basic to proficient—and beyond—so they are prepared with the literacy expertise to thrive in the 21st Century. The standards promote the literacy skills and concepts required for student academic future success in college and career readiness in multiple disciplines.
Arabic Language
The Arabic language is an essential pillar in the existence of the Arab Nation; its unity and renaissance. Arabic language education provides specialized cultural, scientific, and vocational experiences which shall meet the existing and anticipated needs of the Jordanian society and of such standard which helps the student continue higher education or join fields of work. Our Arabic language curriculum enhances scientific and literary knowledge, to consider the constituents of correct linguistic structure, and to relish the arts of the language. Our students will be able to use it easily, expressing themselves in communicating easily with others.
Islamic Religion
The philosophy of Islamic education stems out of the Jordanian constitution, the Islamic Arab civilization, the principles of the great Arab Revolt and the Jordanian national experience. The Hashemite kingdom of Jordan is parliamentary, hereditary and monarchic state where loyalty is for God, the homeland and the king. This philosophy is manifested in the following basics:
1- Faith in Almighty God.
2- Faith in the higher ideals of the Arab Nation.
3- Islam is a system of intellectual behavioral ideology that respects man, exalts the mind and urges for knowledge, work and morality.
4- Islam is a system of wholeness that provides virtuous values and principles that from the consciousness of both the individual and the group.
Mathematics
The mathematical knowledge and skills students need to be prepared for mathematics in college, career, and life are woven throughout our mathematics curriculums, providing high-quality academic standards in mathematics and installing in our students a mathematical language and a system through which they analyze, describe and explain a wide range of experiences, make predictions, and solve problems, recognize situations where mathematics can be applied.
General Science
The science curriculum objectives focus on understanding and applying scientific concepts, methods, and procedures and acquiring scientific attitudes, values, and habits. Our science curriculums follow the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) which are K–12 science content standards. Standards set the expectations for what students should know and be able to do. Crosscutting Concepts help students explore connections across the four domains of science, including Physical Science, Life Science, Earth and Space Science, and Engineering Design.
Vocational
Our vocational classes spark our students’ creativity, developing skills which teach them responsibility, allowing them to make informed decisions about food, home and family life. Enabling students to work independently and as part of a team, not to mention having some extra fun at school and refreshing their educational work load.
Social Studies
Our Social Studies curriculum broadens our students awareness of the world and opens their minds to culture and cultural diversity, change, people, places, environments, individual development and identity, power, authority, governance, production, distribution, consumption, science, technology, society, global connections, civic ideals and practices.
Information Computer Technology
In ICT classes we follow the latest ICT teaching standards and requirements. The intent of the curriculum is to introduce students, to critical digital literacy skills using a sequenced and guided curriculum. Our students become tech-savvy and properly trained to use these tools in all aspects of their educational learning, they deliver enhanced knowledge with high order thinking skills.
Music
In Music courses, students will learn to appreciate this form of spiritual nourishment, academic achievement. They will sing, listen, and work on dance performances and recitals, reacting to music in various ways increasing their social skills and sophistication.
Art
Art supports our student to develop some of the most productive skills to perform better in their lives. Students in different ages will learn to appreciate art and use their imagination and creativity to create many forms of art not limited to drawings. Painting, sculpting, and drawing, greatly develop visual learning and development of fine motor skills.
